Apparently we'll never grow out of twank.
For those who don’t know, after the news broke about MOTU, AngstGoddess tweeted several lines that she claimed were taken from gchats with Icy.
Okay, fandom. Ready? Lettuce play “Guess that chat log.”
“I have to say I do not feel as passionately as you do about the fandom”
“I’m not sure I feel part of the community…”
Icy responded that the tweets were taken out of context, and posted what she said was the full surrounding text on her website in order to provide that context. It’s since been taken down, but thanks to a nonnie, we have a copy for you.
Seems like a classic case of When elephants fight, only the grass suffers. What’s your opinion? Who’s the biggest loser here (besides us?)
How about a comment from you about Twank_Revealed claiming you’re actually AG?
thoughts?
Weren’t they just saying the original Twankhard was AG (it was, thought with two or even three others)?
They also said Twank_Revealed was Twankhard 1.0 looking for publicity. This is like trying to sort out Ms. Scribe’s sockpuppets.
…you’re actually AG?
thoughts?
You just contradicted yourself.
There were also fans of MoTU saying that Rob and Kristen should be cast in a movie based on it now that it’s being published. Huh? This fandom scares me sometimes.
ROFLMAO
Just vomited in my mouth a little. Thanks for that.
Dear God, there are no words.
“This fandom scares me sometimes.”
scares you sometimes? Scares me pretty much all the time
Bwaaaahhhaaaa! Delusional bitches, the lot of them.
WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO DO THAT?
Batshittery.
*doing the stewpid shiver stutter blink routine* y-y-ya-you ju-ju-jus cant…nnnnn-no..nnn-no..!
There’s nothing quite like a BNA getting snippy because another BNA isn’t playing an appropriate role in the fandom.
Bet AG’s chat box is full of tumbleweeds right about now.
what the fuck ever. I pretty much agree with everything AG has said here. Do I agree with blowing it open? I dunno. But I think it’s really clear that she at least gives (or gave) a fuck about this fandom. And assholes like Icy don’t. So, yeah. I’d rather have someone like AG in my community than Icy.
What I find interesting about the (supposed) complete transcript as posted on Icy’s site is AG’s intense concern that Icy become more a part of the Twific “community” and The Fandom. That since The Fandom has been so gracious as to embrace her and her story, she should be sure to do more to be active amongst her readers. She seems very concerned that Icy is not giving The Fandom proper respect.
Saving someone’s gChat, in which they are conversing with you under the assumption that you are two people talking to each other and each other only, and then posting selected parts of it publicly shows tremendous respect for that particular member of The Fandom? Or do only select members of the fandom (and humanity at large) deserve respect? Common courtesy? The right to be treated honestly and above-board?
No matter your opinion on the ethics or legality of MotU’s being published or of the fanfic as a piece of writing; no matter even your opinion of Wide Awake, Company Loves Misery or any of AG’s fics. Twific, The Fandom and all of its beauty and nonsense aside—what AG did in publishing parts of a private conversation sickens me and what respect I had for her as a story-teller is diminished by her petty and unethical behavior. I am only thankful that I never struck up a conversation with her. I say far too may things when inebriated or in the midst of PMS or after a fight with my old man or after someone badmouths my fic—you know, when I’m out of sorts—which I might mean in the heat of the moment, but which I might think better of later and regret having said. You know, like everyone does. But in the hands of AG, a transcript of everyday bitching and moaning can turn lethal.
I just think it’s interesting that the transcript didn’t become public until Icy did something that offended or pissed AG off. If this was the case of Icy never giving a fuck about her readers, she’d already exchanged that info when her and Icy originally had the conversation. So why publish it now and de-friend her, AG? Why put her on blast now as opposed to before when icy–by your own admission– said all these “piss poor” things against her readers and the fandom?
Agendas are amazing, non?
You know whats fucking awesome….They BOTH freakin saved that chat to burn each other with later. Dayum..that is some fuckery there!
That is what is the most fucked up part right there.
As a side note – you might want to turn your gChat to “Off the Record” mode when chatting with these fandom bitches. Just sayin’.
Two (or more!) wrongs don’t make a right. That’s one of the most basic logical fallacies; this fandom’s really fond of committing it. Taking advantage of / piggybacking off of another author’s characters for profit? Wrong (and illegal). Going behind someone’s back and posting snippets of a private conversation in the hopes of defaming a person’s identity (even if pseudonymous)? Also wrong (and potentially illegal).
Publishing fan fiction is illegal. It’s derivative fiction. We could argue about the absurd length of copyright (100+ years is too long, definitely) and what constitutes as “original” work and ideas until we’re blue in the face. That doesn’t change the fact that the law, at present, says this is illegal in most all Western countries.
Icy will never be able to hide the fact that whatever comes from MotU was once connected to this fandom and SM’s Edward and Bella. Little, Brown, & Co. could sue the motherfucking pants off any number of these “I’m publishing my fan fiction!” people at any moment. (Publishing companies have sued over lesser transgressions.)
I understand the desire to write professionally, but building your fan base using another author’s characters is nasty and would never be accepted by a non-fandom-related publisher (big or small). I’m concerned for all these writers and their delusions of grandeur regarding things like Omnific and TWCS. They need to read up on the real publishing business, which — while it may have many faults and be slow to evolve (as the music industry was just ten years ago, pre-iPod era) — it is legally safe and professionally legitimate, provided you pay attention to what you’re doing.
^^^^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^^^^^
Why do others not realise this. It baffles me.
B-b-but I copyrighted my work and everything! I even left a giant A/N on both the top and bottom of EACH chapter. I USED ALL CAPITAL LETTERS!
This works, doesn’t it? Guys?
Ah, you hit the nail on the head! Bravo to you for saying it so well.
There sure are a shit load of lawyers in this Fandom. Everyone seems to be an expert on what is legal…enough with the bogus online law degree’s peeps. We all really know you just googled shit and pulled it off wiki- enough already.
I actually hold a degree in media theory (where I kind of focused on copyright in new media) and am a big participant in Creative Commons, so I do know what I’m talking about, but of course, I’m sure you won’t believe that; it’s more fun not to do so and childishly assume things, like we’re all in kindergarten.
Regardless of my knowledge, though, the wiki link with all its various sources doesn’t lie. Whether you think I know anything or not is completely irrelevant. Sorry. I just don’t rise to that sort bait.
What truly baffles me is that the concept is so utterly simple that I’m sure we could teach it to a class of second graders and they would have no problem understanding it. Yet, an astounding number of idiots in this fandom just can’t grasp it.
Companies that are going to sue look for the highest profile case and go after it to make an example out of the person that wronged them. *whistles* someones gonna pay for her own hype….
I have been reading fanfics for ages and the first and most sacred rule of the fandom is that you do NOT do it for money. That is why no one does take actions against fanfics although it is metal theft (don’t know the right english term right now). People like Icy seriously do damage to us and put ideas in other peole’s head (“If she can make money off it, why don’t I try it as well”) It’s disgusting.
Stephanie Meyer made these characters. We are merely allowed to play with them. There may be no vampires in her fic, but apart from that everything (!!!!) is stolen.
I mean honestly..who is she trying to kid? If you don’t put a disclaimer, your stories don’t even get published on any website.
She even took whole passages from the book word by word and did put it in her fanfic. And now she is claiming that she thought of everything herself? I honestly wish SM would sue her little ass for that.
I say major props to AG for being one of few, if not the only, so called BNA to actually have the guts to openly criticize the other “BNAs” for jumping on the omnifuck bandwagon. From what I understand, AG’s story was pretty popular. Good for her for not being one of the greedy bitches to capitalize on the popularity of Twilight. This fucking fandom has become a joke. I’m so glad I am in no way associated with it anymore.
openly criticizing =//= starting what looks like a personal vendetta
The most important point is entirely missing: Publishing Twilight fanfiction is illegal!
To me they both look ridiculous copying and pasting parts of a private conversation between the two of them. Personally I think Icy comes out worse in the whole fiasco (in terms of what was said) but that’s just my opinion. Jesus it seems like this fandom is regressing the older it gets. I remember when we all behaved in a reasonably civilised and mature way.
Fannfiction is fun!
It’s there to be enjoyed. It’s not there to make you money, make you popular or make up for what ever it is you find yourself lacking in real life. If everyone just took FF for what it is, this fandom may finally grow up.
It should certainly teach everyone to never chat with AngstGoddess.
Yet our Snowqueen is no stranger to ignoring the “private” part of a “private message”. She never had any qualms about sharing hers with her fan club on Twilighted so they could rip into them. She has little room for complaint.
I can’t believe anyone who sees these ladies’ actions can cheer them on. It’s disgusting.
Anyone that basically gets a fanfic mob to cyberspace-lynch a girl isn’t someone to be admired. I don’t condone what Angst did (it’s pretty skanky, in my opinion), but Icy is (like you said) just as guilty too. She sure as hell isn’t an angel. I never cared for her story, but I never commented on it because I could give a shit. However, when she made a big deal about someone translating her story – which ultimately led to some poor girl getting death threats – I knew she was not someone I liked.
And she can pretend to act all innocent as though it wasn’t her intention, but Icy knew EXACTLY what she was doing when she pulled her fic. That was horrible.
At least AG acknowledges she’s a bitch. Icy pretends to be a sweetie when she’s just as big of a bully.
I blame her entirely for standing by and watching her horde of crazy fans virtually crucify anyone who so much as criticizes her or the story. She might as well clap them on their shoulders.
OY WITH THE POODLES ALREADY.
This fandom makes the smallest thing into a big ass fray.
I just read snippets and was bored to tears while reading it, so I stopped.
Do I think what AG was right in publishing lines from the convo? No.
Was it okay for Icy to publish the whole thing? No.
Do I care about AG and Icy’s convo? No.
Is MOTU “publishing deal” wrong? YES.
That’s all I take from this.
OY WITH THE POODLES ALREADY.
This fandom makes the siliest things into a big ass fray.
I started reading the convo, but I was bored to tears with it, so I just stopped.
Do I think AG is right in publishing some lines form the convo? No.
Was Icy right in publishing the whole conversation? No.
Do I care about AG and Icy’s convo? No.
Is MOTU “publishing deal” wrong? YES.
That is all.
Honestly? Icy still sounds sketchy. I didn’t see anything by Sam that would make go, “Uhhhh…”
And when you write: “Who’s the biggest loser here (besides us?)” No one’s a loser. We’re all just laughing.
Haha, exactly. This is all far more entertaining than SI’s crappy story.
Awww….AG look at you. So cute trying to be all wikileaks and shit.
Or no. More like just full of shit.
I am disappoint.
Love the proverb about elephants!
I think both of these ladies need to grow the fuck up. ITS FANFICTION. Jesus they need to get over themselves.
And that goes for any and all BNA’s. YOU WRITE FANFICTION ONLINE. ITS THE INTERNET. GET.OVER.IT
Dont you know..
internet=serious business.
anyone else have the urge to call them bananas after reading BNA so many times? Or maybe BFE’s for their Big Fucking Egos?
If a story isn’t about a self-depricating vampire and a clumbsy, headstrong girl in Forks, Washington, it’s not Twilight. The characterizations are different, the places and plot are completely unrelated. Most of you hags wagging your tongues over this don’t even now what the fuck you’re talking about, and probably haven’t even read the stories you’re dogging. Why is it wrong for someone to discover they have the talent or desire to write for a living? Maybe that wasn’t the original intention in the beginning, but the biggest dreams are not premeditated.
Why do you people care who publishes or not? If you don’t support MOTU, don’t buy the book. Simple. Or it should be.
AG is and has been angry and mean to anyone who doesn’t worship her and agree with everything she says. She gets up on her high horse and points fingers when she should be looking in the mirror. The fact is, she’s jealous. She’s so friggin’ green she’s going to melt into a pile of goo. It was fine when she was the top of the BNA pile, and it was all sunshine and unicorns. But now it’s like…AG who? She can’t handle it so she creates drama to bring hate on someone else and to bring attention back to herself. When someone gives her some what she doles out so freely…she flounces. So, buh bye. Adios. See you…never.
Do I agree with either one of them throwing their personal converstations out into the fandom shitstorm? No. But I understand why Icy felt the need to defend herself when AG posted her words deliberately out of context.
This has nothing to do with the writing. Whether it is good or bad, it will stand on it’s own merrit or not. This is about vapid dogs looking for their next kill, and all because they live for making others miserable. They don’t even care who the target is…just someone to hurt, making themselves feel like “something” by tearing other’s down, when in fact they are “nothing”. Less than nothing.
If AG was Twankhard, then she is just another mongrel, crying for something someone else has, that she wanted. Can’t everyone find something in themselves to love and find a worthwhile purpose? Do something good, don’t tear other’s down. You’ll live a happier life.
What goes around, comes around. With interest.
^^^^^Cool story dude! ^^^^^
Let’s ask Stephenie Meyer and Little Brown how they feel about it. Yes/yes?
^^^^ This ^^^^^^^
It may seem harmless but lets remember that we can only enjoy twilight fanfiction because Stephenie Meyer and her publishing house allows it. This pulling to publish (profiting from copyrighted characters) could very easily result in her pulling an Anne Rice. Especially when the author and fans were stupid enough to go crazy on twitter over the news.
Meyer has been cool so far with fanfiction, but when more and more Twilight fics get published, I wonder how long it will be before she pulls the plug and, like you said Ellie, pulls an Anne Rice or JR Ward. I can’t believe SM is totally unaware of what is going on. I’m sure Little Brown are aware too and just seeing if it is worth fighting over.
I think your right SM and Little Brown were probably aware but I would assume the small scale and low sales made them think it wasn’t worth their time pursuing. An FF being published trending on twitter could well change their minds. I just don’t understand how writers think they can copyright and publish characters based on characters that have already been copyrighted and published. In the end they’ll ruin it for all of us which is a shame.
So we don’t know what the fuck we are talking about? Don’t be so ignorante woman, you don’t know any of us… Did u know that if the real author doesn’t even want you to write fanfiction on line you can’t? Check out the incident with Anne Rice. It’s their right, and when an author like SMeyer is kind enough to let you write it -or just doens’t care, whatever…- you don’t go and change the names and locations of your fanfiction and publish it. Because no mater how good you are changing everything you have a lot of people that knows and has that fanfiction proving that you got inspired with Twilight, those were the original characters.. changing stuff and publishing it is like a bad joke..
Yes the trail of PDFs are a billion miles long..good luck with that cover up….*waves her copy around*
Could you send me one of the pdfs? would love it lol
Most of you hags wagging your tongues over this don’t even now what the fuck you’re talking about . . . .
It’s interesting you say that, because this, “If a story isn’t about a self-depricating vampire and a clumbsy, headstrong girl in Forks, Washington, it’s not Twilight” proves that you don’t have even the slightest grasp of intellectual property (or spelling). I’m not going to get into it because I feel as though that would be like trying to fill a thimble with a bucket full of information. It has been explained in the comments of this blog and is quite easy to research. I would suggest you do that before opening your mouth about a concept of which you have no clue simply because you wish to whiteknight Icy, her terrible story (which I did have the displeasure of reading) and her aspirations as a “published” “writer.”
I will give you a very, very, very simple baseline that I hope permeates the incredibly thick skulls that seem to populate this fandom: If you wish to be an actual, published writer – write original fiction. This means a story wholly and completely of your own mind and not spawned from anyone else’s.
I agree; MOTU has little to do with Twilight as written by SMeyer. But leaving aside plot points, Twilight changed the game for Icy’s story. It originated in, and gained popularity through, Meyer’s fandom, and because of that, any profits she makes must be assumed to be due to the appeal of Meyer’s original characters. (Jaysus, I read a comment on her blog asking if “Icy had to change the names, because I really just love reading about Edward and Bella!” Uh…face/palm.)
Furthermore, to publish something as original fiction that will always be floating around in its original, fanfic version…how is that smart? Lol-ing at the thought of lawyers for either side having to read the MOTU beast!
Listen, I’m not saying that traditional publication doesn’t need to change its ways, and certainly people can make money and inflate their egos by selling their own work online. I just think what Omnific and TWCS venture are doing is disingenuous at best and illegal at worst.
“If a story isn’t about a self-depricating vampire and a clumbsy, headstrong girl in Forks, Washington, it’s not Twilight. Maybe that wasn’t the original intention in the beginning, but the biggest dreams are not premeditated.”
Hmm.. I would agree that most people that start out writing fanfiction don’t plan on publishing. Yet, when their story gets popular, they all of a sudden feel that their story that was inspired by ANOTHER WRITER’S WORK deserves to be published. It is great when someone discovers they have a talent for writing. Gifted, talented writers are few and far between.
BUT
That gifted and talented writer should then sit down and create his or her own unique world with unique characters and a unique plot. And perhaps when that is done and it’s ready for publishing, invite her loyal readers from her fanfiction and say “Hey, I wrote my own book, a brand new story with exciting characters, it’ll be released on XX/XX/XXXX, go pick it up at your local bookstore!”
Regardless of how OOC a fanfiction story may be, whether it’s AH or AU – ITS STILL FANFICTION. THE INITIAL INSPIRATION WAS THE SAME.
My Twilight fanfic is not set anywhere where the original story is, my characters are human, and there are a few personality differences…yet I know where I got my inspiration from. When I publish something, it will NOT be my fanfic, it will be an unique work of my own imagining. Not only is publishing fanfiction morally wrong (stealing, no?) but it is also illegal.
Have we beat this horse plenty dead yet?
ITA, Captain. Fanfiction is a great tool for honing one’s writing skills and getting feedback on writing style, etc. However, once a fic writer has refined her skills, why not do a totally original story? I would imagine that the readers who liked your fic will give your original stuff a peek too. A writer would still have a somewhat built-in audience. At first when I heard about Omnific, I thought, “Cool. Someone is giving fic writers a place to publish their original stuff.” And then just found out it’s barely re-worked fics that don’t translate well outside of the Twilight world whether it be AU/AH.
find/replace find/replace …empty hallow characters who were never fuly formed cuz why bother..Meyer did that for ya! lol
Is it true that psymom (i think that’s her name) who runs twilighted is also one of the creators of omnific?????
Ignore me I just found an answer to my own question, lol.
After reading the posted snippets and the convo transcript, all I can say is really? Are we in middle school? …
BWAHAHHAAAAA!
AG throws dirt in the left corner of Whatshertoolongnevercanbeshortened username and she throws back! Kids! No one likes to play nice, everyone wants to play dirty!
SHHHHHH you’re gonna end up accidently writing their next fic..or im sorry, in icys case “serious novel..for them
*Visions of Lesbella rolling in the mud with Mrs. R-u-gonna-eat-that*
Can someone tell me where I can download the story? lol I would still want to read the fic at least once again ^^
